It is estimated that more than 2.5 billion people in the world play games online. This ranges from multiplayer RPG games to online casino games. There are many projects and initiatives geared toward online gaming enthusiasts that seek to address the environmental concerns in our society.
The Green Gaming Project
The Green Gaming Project is a research initiative that will run over a period of four years. The project will focus on green gaming and how the use of analogue and digital games can be used to create more awareness about environmental concerns.
The scientific consensus that climate change will have a negative impact on our environment and society is now indisputable. The goal of the project is to educate online gamers about the environmental impacts of climate change and pollution.
The project constitutes a series of studies that will be conducted and managed by Kristoffer S. Fjællingsdal and Christian Klöckner from the University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.
Playing for The Planet Alliance
This project was first launched during the Climate Summit on 23 September 2019 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The initiative aims to reach more than 1 billion video game players. The UN Environment Programme will facilitate and support this initiative as well.
iGaming Environmental Initiatives
Environmental initiatives give avid gamblers and punters the opportunity to contribute to the global environmental agenda by reducing their emissions and participating in a series of environmental projects.
Gambling operators like the iBet sportsbook already help to reduce the carbon footprint by helping punters to bet and win real cash from the comfort of their own homes. Projects like The Green Gaming Project and Playing for The Planet continue to inspire online gamers and punters to contribute to a more sustainable future.
